What is Māori Language Moment?
In 1972 30,000 signatures were delivered to Parliament calling for te reo Māori to be taught in schools. It was a defining moment in the journey to revitalise our language. We want to grow one million speakers by 2040 and on Monday 14th September, as our language champions did in the past, we’ll start with a defining moment: the Māori Language Moment.
The official Māori Language Moment website is here and we encourage everyone who registers for our Zoom session to also pledge their commitment on the official website to count as one of the million.

What will we be doing?
We are inviting our staff, students, alumni and network (our whole whanau) to join us for a Zoom session where we’ll celebrate te reo in a number of ways.
-
Kōrero – we’ll speak Te Reo and encourage you to introduce yourself with your pepeha if you feel comfortable
-
Waiata – we’ll sing a song together
-
Ako – we’ll teach you some phrases and words
-
Tākaro – we’ll play some games (prizes up for grabs!)
If you can only join for part of the session, that’s okay just dial in when you can.
